Resources to Help Your Special Interest WebSite Sell More

Special Interest WebSites - the Sales Challenge

Here at Practical Selling, one of our basic rules is "90:10", so we don't expect you to browse around the whole site. Instead, on this page we summarise the aspects of the site that are most relevant to the webmasters of specialist websites.

If you do nothing else - please sign up for our periodic E-Zine "90:10" so at least we can be sure you won't miss out on any of the good stuff coming along in the future. Please also be sure to email us and let us know if there are sales-related areas of concern for your specialist web site that you think we could help with here.

Specialist websites face a special challenge in selling their products and services. Your greatest strength is your specialisation in a niche area, but by definition that usually means:

  • The total number of potential customers - or users of your site - is limited.
  • They are thinly spread around the world - with few obvious gathering places.
It's critically important, therefore, that you maximise the opportunities you have to sell to your visitors - and especially to establish a relationship with them that encourages repeat sales. (Selling fo ryou might not mean shipping a product - it might mean signing up to a newsletter, using your bulletin board ...) If your background isn't in selling, then all this may seem like a black art. That's where we come in ...

Many people think that great products sell themselves, others subscribe to the "if you build it they will come" school of passive marketing - but most webmasters quickly realise that the visitors don't come, and nothing moves off the shelf or gets booked in the work log if you don't actually sell it.

The internet of course has made it possible for the most specialised of sites to reach a viable market, and has introduced new routes to market and channels of communication to the new generation of special interest webmasters - but the challenge of actually "selling" remains. It is no more adequate to set up a web site and stand back than it is to put up a sign in your attic and then stand beside it waiting for customers.

Special Interest WebMasters - Training Courses

Affiliate Masters Course (from Ken Evoy)

Specialist web sites can be an excellent vehicle for affiliate programs. This course specifically uses the model of a special interest web site to carry related and cross-selling affiliate programs.
So you will be shown step by step how you can generate extra revenue from your site.

InfoProduct Masters Course (from Ken Evoy)

InfoProducts - also known as e-books - are a good opportunity for anyone with specialist knowledge. Even if you are not the leading authority on your subject, you probably have access to the people who are - or certainly to the sites that contain valuable information. You will actually be helped to define, create, market and sell a small infoproduct during this course.

Pricing Masters Course (from Ken Evoy)

If you manufacture your own products - atoms or electrons (that is - physical goods, or digital products), setting the right price can make the difference between success and failure, profit and loss. In small, specialist markets like yours this is especially true, as the competitive disciplines of a larger marketplace may not be there - it can be hard to tell what is the "right" price.
Fortunately, the tools now exist to take the guesswork out of the process!

Special Interest WebSites - Feature Articles

Get Targeted Traffic for Your Web Site

The more specialised your site, the more difficult to find the people out there with the same interest - and for them to find you! But did you know that there are ways to make sure that the people who arrive at your site are qualified and targeted - that is, they are actually interested in what you do !
And - the more specialised your site, the less it should cost you ...

Transform Your Sales by Selling Benefits!

A golden rule for everyone - don't "sell" features, people "buy" benefits. Find out the difference in this article ...

Special Interest WebSites - Additional Resources

These are items we don't have full articles on yet - but they're important enough for you to know about them now ...

Build A Community to Build Your Business

You have a limited number of potential customers for your special subject area - make sure you keep them coming back to your site time and time again, and help them stay in touch with like-minded people.

Everyone.net is the leader in creating bolt-on community facilities for specialist websites. In a nutshell, you can have free email, discussion forums, and live chat - all looking like they are on your site, but with no technical hassle, and no costs. In fact - you get to use half the advertising inventory to raise more revenue (or give away pro bono).

They also do search and advertising services, but it is free email and communities that are the really "sticky" features you will want to add to your site.

Use Your Specialist Knowledge to Increase Traffic

"The E-Zine Marketing Machine" is a technique that provides you with free publicity, world-wide exposure, and a very effective traffic driver (I know - I've used it!).
On top of that, it increases your "presence" and authority, providing an even more effectice platform for your future activities.

Note - this product comes packaged with a number of bonus items. Some of them I don't rate too highly (they're a bit too "evangelical marketeer" for me - but your mileage may vary). However, the asking price is more than worth it for the core marketing advice in the main title alone and I recommend it on that basis.

Make Your Words Sell!

If you have browsed around this site, you'll gather I'm a great fan of Ken Evoy's products - they've certainly been instrumental in changing (and improving!) my approach to business on the internet.
Hot of the Press (as of Sunday 5th August) is the latest addition - "Make Your Words Sell!". I think this will be extremely useful for anyone in a specialist area as it will give them the best of both worlds. You already have the technical, specialist vocabulary that creates trust and comfort with your target visitors. MYWS! gives you the extra ability to use language that attracts people to your site, pulls them into your pages, and persuades and influences their actions once they are there.
